THEA GILMORE (ALBUM: MURPHY'S HEART)

music - THEA GILMORE (Main Room)
Mon 4th Oct 2010 - Birmingham

Thea's 10th album, Murphy's Heart, will be released on August 30th.

Murphy’s Heart is smart, honest and confident enough to concentrate on life’s most important themes: love and sex. She considers both the damage that love does, the violence that it can invoke, the guilt that comes with parental love, but also the maddening truth that one means precisely nothing without the other. Gilmore is wise enough to write a song like God’s Got Nothing On You, which casually nails an habitual self-regarder (already speculation has it that one Tony Blair was the inspiration) who abandons "all those friends you outgrew with Bombay gin and a rose tattoo…", while being uncynical and open enough to write something as beautiful as Due South, where a young man heads off, “feet on the dash of a rented car”, only to soon find himself alone and lost, "looking for hope in stiletto heels…"

Internationally acclaimed, hailed as a favourite by artistes including Bruce Springsteen and Martha Wainwright, and described by the Independent as "the most prolific and intelligent wordsmith of her generation", Thea Gilmore is back in town with a festive show that bears her own highly individual stamp.

"The best British singer-songwriter of the last ten years - and then some!" Uncut

"Gilmore is blazing her own path towards classic status as a songwriter" - The Guardian

"Deceptively populist and deceitfully dark" - Mojo

"Britain has spawned very few world class female singer-songwriters, but Gilmore is already in a league of her own" - Q magazine

"Vituperative, intelligent and sharp as a tack" - Observer

"A beautiful, deeply affecting piece of work..go and buy this, and then tell all your friends" - Observer Music Magazine *****

"Career highlight...a resounding confirmation of her singular talent" - Gavin Martin, Uncut ****

"Rare and textured beauty..in a voice as warm as her heart is dark" - Nick Duerden, Q Magazine ****

"The most coherent, literate and charged british singer-songwriter of her generation...makes mincemeat of the current propensity for feyness" - MOJO ****
