IMELDA MAY ...

Many of you will have had the pleasure of enjoying Imelda's performances at The Candy Box Burlesque shows. Now you have the opportunity to indulge yourself in an evening that's all Imelda.

Michael Parkinson has billed her as 'one of the best singers I've heard in a long time. I'm a great fan of hers. A very, very good singer indeed' (BBC Radio 2 June 2006).

Prince Albert of Monaco personally invited her last August to do a repeat performance in front of several thousand people in the South of France.

From an early age Imelda was already capturing hearts through the songs she sang, and although a great deal of the material she sings now are originals, those well-known standards of the by-gone days are belted out in such a manner that makes them wholeheartedly her own. Her musical roots are influenced from the jazzy blues of the 40s & 50s with the likes of Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, but are brought into 2006 with
the most infectious unique qualities making her one hell of a diva!

Imelda May and her new band - a trio of renowned musicians (and personal friends) who's musical background boast a history of performances on stage with some of the best names in the industry (Van Morrison, Roy Wood, Mike Sanchez and Richard Hawley) all of whom jumped at the opportunity of working with Imelda.

Dublin-born Imelda is fast becoming regarded by fans and critics as one of the finest vocalists currently emerging in the world of Jazz, Blues, R&B, and Rock’n’Roll.

"Dublin-born Imelda May has the rare kind of raw talent and timeless glamour that truly illuminates the stage. You don't just watch Imelda perform, you experience it. Whether it's her infectiously unique fusion of rockabilly, blues and jazz, her extensive self-penned repertoire, her sassy burlesque-inspired performances or her distinctive interpretation of classic standards, her appeal is both seductive and undeniable. As such, she is fast emerging as one of the finest vocalists from the UK Roots music scene today."
classics and jazz

It takes just a few bars of Imelda May's debut album to see just why people are getting excited about this glamour-loving chanteuse. The rockabilly influence on Johnny Got A Boom Boom might be obvious but this is no unearthing of dusty standards. May injects a rare contemporary energy to these varied originals. The work of Wanda Jackson has obviously had an influence, but a jazzy nightclub ambience also appears along with the occasional hint of country. A track like Falling In Love With You Again is just classic songwriting regardless of genre, while the sultry Knock 123 sees May playing the Jessica Rabbit-style femme fatale.

The music lives up to the wild child visuals – Love Tattoo and Smotherin Me are slices of Sun Studios-era danceable fun – and May has that crackle in her voice that marks her as a natural.
