Seed Talks: The Science of Parallel Universes

Science has consistently shown us that we are not special; the Earth is just one of may planets orbiting the Sun, which itself is just one of billions of stars in our galaxy, in a universe containing hundreds of billions of galaxies. So why should it stop there with our universe being unique? Or should we consider that there might be millions of universes out there? Does every choice you make create an alternative reality? Could we ever find out whether these other universes exist, and even communicate with them? The topic has been explored through countless books, TV series and movies, but how much of what they say about the ‘multiverse’ is accurate? In this talk Prof. Amelie Saintonge will talk you through the science behind parallel universes, and how researchers are even attempting to recreate the multiverse in the lab. You will be amazed to see that reality is even more mind-boggling than fiction!

Seed Talks: The Science of The Multiverse: Do Parallel Universes Exist? – 25th February, in Birmingham

Discover the scientific controversy surrounding the idea of multiple universes and parallel worlds in this intriguing talk. Followed by Q+A

Multiple universes and parallel worlds are all the rage in film and TV these days from the Marvel cinematic universe to Stranger Things. But multiverses are more than just fiction, many scientists are increasingly convinced that our universe is just one of a vast number of hidden worlds.

Multiverses crop up all over the place in physics. The modern Big Bang theory suggests that our Universe was just one of an effectively infinite number that are continuously being birthed. Some quantum physicists even argue that every time a choice is made, the universe branches into two parallel worlds. Multiverses have also been invoked to explain why our Universe seems peculiarly well set up for life to exist.

However, the idea of the multiverse is also hugely controversial, striking at the heart of what it means to do science. In this talk, Dr Michael Brooks takes us on a tour of the multiverse, exploring why it’s being taken seriously by many scientists and asking whether we’ll ever be able to access these other worlds.

Doors open at 6:30pm, last entry at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm – come down early to grab a good seat!
